So Cici Cool and Modern – Cici Art Factory Interview

Nursery décor allows you to introduce your child to colour, shape and character. Their first room is a reflection of not only your imagination, but also the quickly growing imagination of your precious little one. Your child will find inspiration in everything, from crib bedding to their favourite teddy bear to what art you choose to hang on the wall.

This is where Cici Art Factory comes in. With hand-painted, original, art pieces your child’s bedroom takes on a new dimension of creativity and meaning. I absolutely love these bright and cheerful designs created by Vancouver artist Liz Clay. Her fresh designs are a gift that will continue to inspire your child for many, many, years.

I recently got a chance to ask artist Liz Clay a few questions about her art, her business and how they work together!

What’s your background in art and design?

In 2002 I graduated from Emily Carr with a degree in Visual Arts. My work at this time was map related. I would use layers of plexi-glass to create visual histories of various neighborhoods around the city and was interested in buildings that were designed but never built.

How did you get started with Cici Art?

In 2006, while on maternity leave with my second, I felt ready to get back into art. I’d spent the last few years working in design and advertising but wanted to pursue something that was more flexible and that I could call my own. Cici Art Factory started by simply doing a few paintings for my girls’ rooms and grew from there.

What inspired the “Lotsa” collection and which design is your favourite?

cici art chicksThe first Lotsa was actually a business card design. ‘Cici’ meant bottle to my daughter so I played around with the idea of a bottle factory and what would rows and rows of bottles look like. The chicks, birds & frogs (and subsequently ladybugs, penguins, snails, and goldfish) stemmed from there.

I like the yellow organized chicks for their simplicity. The line drawing is so simple but you can get alot of expression into them simply by the angle of their beak, legs, size and how they’re interacting with the chick beside it.

What’s unique about Cici Art?

I believe little eyes deserve to see art that sparks imaginations and activates rooms. With this, I think it’s important that there’s a hand-done element to art – where the lines are a little wobbly and the paint is thick and chunky.

How has it been networking and building your brand in the Vancouver mom community?

cici art chicksThe Vancouver mom community is amazing and so supportive. I really love the baby shows where I can meet with customers directly and figure out what might work best for them. The wholesale side of things offers a little behind the scenes look at retail. And then of course, there’s meeting other mom-based businesses and seeing their businesses grow year by year.
I’m looking forward to seeing Cici Art Factory grow year by year as well!
