Top Decor Themes for 2011
If you’ve been looking for a post-holiday project to keep you busy this winter, why not revitalize your child’s bedroom, nursery, or playroom. We’ve got some expert guidance and a few product ideas to get you started. Heather B from Furniture And Design Ideas has a few pointers to share.
Q: What are the top trends you see coming for children’s rooms in 2011?
A: As we all become more involved in ways to heal and protect our planet, eco-friendly interior designs and children’s furniture are gaining momentum and will continue to be a growing trend in 2011.
For awhile there it appeared to go out of fashion but wallpaper, especially patterns with whimsical themes, is making a comeback. Murals are also a growing trend in 2011 with peel and stick products from manufacturers like Oopsy Daisy becoming more and more popular.
Colors are bold with the focus on pinks like honeysuckle and coral and bright blues such as turquoise and sky. Prefer softer shades for your nursery or child’s room? Then go for less intense hues of these trendy colours.
Plaids are making an appearance as fabrics for both window treatments and nursery bedding. But mixing solid colors with floral patterns like the Banana Fish Cocoa 4-Piece Baby Crib Bedding Set is an ongoing trend.
Q: Do you have any favourite nursery themes?
A: I have a lot of favourite nursery themes! But I will try to limit them to my personal top ten picks.
10. Moon and stars
9. Butterflies
8. Ladybugs
7. Pirates – yar!
6. Sports – especially car racing (yes I am a Formula 1 fan)
5. Animals of any kind
4. Jungle theme
3. Day at the Circus
2. Flowers
1. And my absolute favourite because he makes me laugh – Winnie the Pooh
Q: Are there any quick refresher suggestions for either bedrooms or playrooms?
A: The quickest way to refresh any room, whether it’s a child’s bedroom or a playroom, is a new coat of paint. If you can’t paint the whole room, I suggest choosing a bright color and picking one wall of the room as an accent wall.
Yes, it’s all about the furniture and its functionality, either a bedroom or a playroom environment, but don’t forget the walls – they are also a part of the space. Another way to give a bedroom or playroom a facelift is to change the wall art if you already have pictures on the walls, or to add them if you don’t. The same rule applies to accessories. You can easily refresh a bedroom by purchasing a new bedding set or a playroom with a new toy chest, some colorful storage bins, or a new activity table.
Throw it on the floor – an area rug that is! You can make a bedroom or a playroom look new again by adding a colorful or patterned area rug. It also will create visual interest, giving the décor some “life.”
