Sleep Like A Baby
How To Teach Baby Healthy Sleeping Habits
“People who say they sleep like a baby usually don’t have one,” said Leo J. Burke. Now, we don’t know who Leo is but, as parents to sleepless newborns, we know how true that statement is.
- Establish a routine before bed. Helping your child become familiar with a set of bedtime rituals will help her know it’s time to sleep. A routine could include a soothing bath, feeding him, putting on PJs or singing a lullaby.
- In the first few weeks of life, baby will not be able to distinguish between day and night. Help her develop the habit of sleeping through the night by feeding her just a bit more before bed. Even half an ounce more will help her sleep for a longer period of time between feedings.
- To teach baby to fall asleep on his own, put him to bed when he’s drowsy. Training him to fall asleep in his crib and not your arms will go a long way in establishing healthy sleeping habits early on.
- Baby should always sleep on her back, which greatly reduces the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
- Make sure your baby’s mattress is firm against the sides of the cribs. And keep baby’s crib free of pillows, plush toys and comforters.
